Burnsville -- Centrally located in the Western NC Mountains , the Blue Ridge area of the Appalachian Highlands surrounds Yancey County. The Black Mountain Range crosses the south end of the county, intersected by the Blue Ridge Range and the Unaka Range. Burnsville at an elevation of 2,815 feet is gateway to Mt. Mitchell (at 6,684 feet, the highest mountain east of the Mississippi) and 18 additional peaks with elevations exceeding 6,300 feet. No wonder Yancey County has the highest average elevation of any county in North Carolina.

One of the wonderful traditions of Burnsville is the pride in craftsmanship that goes back many generations. In addition to fine quilters, basketmakers, and other traditional craftspeople, many other artists have settled here, many who have national and international reputations. Aspiring artists continue to be lured to the Penland School of Crafts.
